On October 18, 2022, the Hill College Board of Regents met for the monthly regular session meeting.
In addition to the minutes and financial report from the September meeting being approved, Dr. Thomas Mills, President, reported on his activities, including meeting with Congressman Williams; hosting Dr. Hurley, Tarleton State University President, on campus; attending a Hillsboro industry tour with Art Mann; and touring the new Burleson Higher Education Center.
Dr. Mills also became a Hillsboro Lions Club Member. He was presented the first of the Teach the President Forums on October 21, discussing instruction. Three more sessions are scheduled: October 28 on the Quality Enhancement Plan, November 11 on performing arts, and December 2 on student information services. Dr. Mills also attended the Burleson Opportunity Fund Breakfast of Champions and held the first Executive Leadership Retreat. At the Johnson County campus, he attended the Advisory Board and the Development Foundation meetings.
Regarding campus activities, Dr. Mills attended several athletic events, including soccer and volleyball. He joined the Performing Arts group on a road trip to the opera. He also attended the Ragtime theater show in Cleburne.
On college business, Dr. Mills gave an update on enrollment. The second eight-week session enrollment is at 589 students, an increase compared to fall 2021. The Asset Management Plan was also discussed, including needs on campus such as repairs and beautification projects. Phase 1 of the plan is ongoing, including library erosion repair, Loftland demolition, Bailey Residence Hall electrical upgrade, roof replacements for Frazier and Dudley Halls, baseball field repairs, and the completion of tree removal and maintenance.
Dr. Mills also presented the rebranding of the Continuing Education (CE) department, which was moved in June from Student Services to the Instruction department, and will report to Dr. Schindler. It will align with the four pathways and has been renamed Job Training and Workforce Partnerships.
Athletic Director, Paul Brown, presented the athletic report, including that the Hill College women’s soccer team is presently listed as #4 in the nation. Both soccer teams are playing in the regional tournament. He also reported that former Hill College baseball player, Trevor Stephan (2014–2016), is pitching for the Cleveland Guardians in the MLB American League Division Series.
The college’s mission statement was reviewed and approved by the board.
